The ABC of vocational education and training

The ABC of vocational education and trainingClient: Australian National Training Authority

Subject: Vocational education and training

Major achievement: In our client's words, creating a brochures series that explains ‘everything you ever wanted to know about vocational education and training, in a simple, easy to read format … these attractive brochures are a must for anyone with an active interest in vocational education and training’.

The project: Recent reforms to vocational education and training have been fundamental and widespread, and trainers and their clients have struggled to keep track of what it all means for them.

Our challenge was to explain the major initiatives in clear, simple words. It was a challenge we were eager to accept: in our view, vocational education and training is ’a great story, waiting to be told’.

We reviewed over five hundred pages of reference material covering twenty six subject areas; and created a strong text and design format for the series. This ensured a series consistency that helps readers recognise blocks of information within brochures, and brochures within the series.

In an area sometimes criticised for its density, jargon and acronyms, we aimed to keep the text light, simple and, above all, interesting. We specified a clear English writing style for the series, then wrote all the texts in that style. We commissioned photographs and illustrations for the whole series; and designed and produced artwork and coordinated production of all products, including an attractive folder.
