Learning guides

Client: Australian Light Manufacturing Industry Training Advisory Board

Subject: Vocational education and training

Major achievement: An attractive series of guides, developed in conjunction with learners and enterprises, that can be used to teach people on-the-job.

The project: Training Packages offer enterprises unprecedented opportunities to offer on-the-job training that leads to a nationally recognised qualification. They contain all the tools - competency standards, assessment guidelines, qualifications structures - that enterprises need.

Well, almost! If managers, supervisors and other workers are to be effective workplace trainers, they need quality, easy to use resources to guide the learner through the learning process; and to help them collect evidence of their competence.

To create these resources, we went to workplaces to see how people are trained, and how the industry competency standards can improve current training. Then, for each part of the standard, we found out how it could be taught, and what evidence would be required that the trainee was competent. Using this information, we wrote a guide to each standard, including information, instructions and activities. The guides can, if required, be used with a minimum of intervention; and they enable the learner to collect evidence of competence for their assessment.
