Major achievement: The systematic classification of IT industry jobs into a comprehensive database, the definition of skills required for each job, and the linking of subjects and courses provided for the skills by tertiary and vocational education and training providers.
The project: Human capital development in the information technology industry is restrained by confusing, contradictory and frequently overlapping job titles and job descriptions. Different employers give the same job different titles, and include different skills under the same title.
As a first step in establishing a national database for IT industry jobs, skills and training available, we created a comprehensive classification structure covering all known IT industry jobs. Then, using the IT&T Industry Training Package as a base, we defined the skills required for the most-in-demand jobs in the industry. We then worked with tertiary and vocational education and training institutions to map their courses against the skills required for work in the industry.
The result is SkillsMentor - making it easier to get the skills needed for work in the IT industry.
